The benefits of kitchen cabinet painting, refacing or refinishing vs buying new:

It’s fast! You can start using your kitchen in just a few days, and the whole job can usually be done in about a week.

It’s a fraction of the cost of replacing your cabinets, and no one but you will know they’re not new cabinets.

  • You get a factory finish without needing to get a new kitchen.
  • You won’t have tradespeople going in and out of your home for months.
  • There’s no need to change or repair flooring, drywall, tile-work, or wall / ceiling paint.
  • It doesn’t leave any wall damage that would have to be repaired.
  • You won’t need to get plumbing and electrical work done. This is often required with a complete kitchen renovation.
  • You can keep your existing countertops.
  • There’s less mess and disruption for you and your family while the work is being done.
  • You can use custom colours that many store-bought kitchens don’t offer. (We are, after all, interior painting and staining experts. You might as well benefit from that!)

The Best Paint to Paint Kitchen Cabinets:
Our Recommendations

The best paint for your kitchen cabinets depends on the colour and the type of finish that you and/or you and your designer decide on, and how the kitchen will be used.

If you have a lot of steam in certain areas, we recommend a product with more polymers for moisture resistance. If you have children and/or pets, we use products that are more abrasive resistant. Ideally, it’s best to choose a coating that has both qualities.

If someone has a high sensitivity to fumes that could have a long off-gassing period, we recommend a waterborne lacquer. There are guidelines for protecting the waterborne finish for a certain amount of time during the curing period after it is applied. We have to be gentler with them than with solvent-based lacquers while the cabinets are curing.

Occasionally, we use a 2K (two part) polyurethane. This requires mixing the polyurethane with a hardener or catalyst to activate it.

Some other painting techniques we can use are antiquing, lacquering, and distressing. Antiquing creates the look of natural wear and tear on wood from years of use or discolouration. Lacquering and distressing are used to create a relic finish by either light or heavy sanding, which requires an artistic touch.

Faux finishing is yet another option for your cabinets. We use either a wet glaze or dry glaze, depending on the desired level of accentuation. There are different variations of wet glazes and dry glazes. We can also add a random patina/relic effect by using spatter, a purposefully-placed stain that, similar to antiquing, mimics years of natural wear and tear.

A further consideration is the product/finish that was used on your existing cabinets, as this can affect the choices for the new finish.

Confused? You can relax. Once we narrow down the type of finish you’re interested in, we’ll produce some samples for you to ensure you get exactly what you want.

Kitchen Cabinet Painting: our process

While we love and specialize in all residential interior painting projects, kitchen cabinet projects are our hands-down favourite. To get the smoothest, most luxuriant finish, we spray kitchen cabinets rather than using a roller or brush, for a factory finish.

Our process includes removing the kitchen cabinet doors, which we take to our spray shop. Our spray booth allows us to spray the doors in controlled conditions to get the best finish possible.

For the rest of the kitchen cabinets, we set up a temporary spray booth around the cabinetry. This allows us to spray the cabinets without getting paint on anything else. We use paper and plastic to completely protect your countertops and backsplash. We also use a portable on-site exhaust to create a negative pressure booth. This helps eliminate fumes and atomized paint inside the on-site booth and stops anything from escaping.

The shell/bones, doors, and drawers all get filled where needed, sanded, and degreased before any spray work is done. We do everything required for kitchen cabinet painting, like installing soft-close hinges, replacing glass doors, replacing handles/pulls, and making minor alterations to cabinets.

Kitchen Cabinet Refacing  (Resurfacing): Save Thousands

If you want to update your kitchen, cabinet refacing (resurfacing) can save you thousands. In most cases, we can expertly reface your existing cabinets and no one but you will know they’re not new!

How much can you save if you go for kitchen cabinet refacing over buying new kitchen cabinets?

The cost of new kitchen cabinets depends on a number of factors: whether they’re store-bought or custom-made, size of kitchen, choice of door and drawer front materials, and the number of accessories. On top of the price of the cabinets, there is the installation cost, which can be as much as or even more than the cabinets.

To give you a general idea of the savings, kitchen cabinet refacing can be done for about 20-25% of the cost of new kitchen cabinets. Think of what you can do with the money you save—like taking a nice vacation or two!

If your kitchen cabinet framework is in good condition, refacing and adding other enhancements can give you the look and functionality of a new kitchen. The framework stays while the fronts and hardware are replaced.

Our customers choose cabinet refacing when they want a different style of door to modernize the kitchen or when they want to lighten up cabinets that have a dark stain. It’s a cost-effective, relatively easy way to freshen up your home and make it more comfortable for you and your family.

When you choose refacing, you have a lot of flexibility in terms of what your kitchen will look like. We have years of experience in refacing and altering kitchen cabinets, and will work closely with you to help you bring your vision to life.

Cabinet Refacing Styles

You decided to reface your kitchen cabinets because you want a different style, a lighter stain tone, or your existing doors and drawers are old and dilapidated. The overall look and feel of your kitchen comes from the door and drawer style.

Some of the different styles are:

Shaker cabinet styleShaker. Currently, this is the most popular style. Five-piece shaker style doors will typically have a maple frame and an MDF centre. Using an MDF centre instead of solid wood brings the cost down and reduces warping. The popularity of this style is due to the fact that it can work with both traditional and contemporary looks. People commonly replace their existing MDF cabinets with maple.

Arch cabinet styleArch (cathedral or roman). This is a classic look for wood cabinet doors. The options are either cathedral (single top arch) or roman (top and bottom arches). This is a great option if you are unhappy with the current amber or gold-tone stain colour, and would prefer a lighter colour.

Raised panel cabinet styleRaised panel. In this style, the profile of the centre panels can be simple or complex, depending on your preference. Raised panel doors are typically used to get a more traditional or formal look.

MDF cabinet styleMDF (medium density fibreboard). MDF doors and drawers are a very versatile and cost-effective option. They can be manufactured in a flat, shaker, or raised panel style and, similar to solid wood, they can be painted or stained.

We order the drawers and doors from a manufacturer. You can also choose to have different styles/types of glass installed. Once manufactured, they go to our spray shop where your choice of finish is applied, and then they’re ready to be installed in your kitchen.

For the rest of the kitchen cabinets, we set up a temporary spray booth around the cabinetry. This allows us to spray the cabinets without getting stain or paint on anything else. We use paper and plastic to completely protect your countertops and backsplash.

We also use a portable on-site exhaust to create a negative pressure booth. This helps eliminate fumes and atomized paint inside the on-site booth and stops anything from escaping.

Custom Fine Finishes: Our Process

Depending on the desired finish, we use either a wipe or spray technique. The only time we use a brush is when we’re creating certain effects, like antiquing. The more popular requests are a shadow or a wipe stain, or a combination of both.

Our process includes removing the cabinet doors, which we take to our spray shop. The spray shop allows us to spray the doors in controlled conditions to get the best finish possible.

For the rest of the kitchen cabinets, we set up a temporary spray booth around the cabinetry. This allows us to spray the cabinets without getting stain on anything else.

Refinishing Products & Methods

There are many different products and methods that we can use to achieve the required colour and finish for your cabinets. Some woods require multiple products because of the way the grain takes stain. Other products pop the grain and may be more suitable for the look you want.

To achieve a dark tone (sometimes referred to as a black out effect), we use either:

  • A deep, penetrating stain, and a shadow stain on top.
  • A medium-colour toner and a darker, penetrating stain on top.

Then we apply our sealers and clear coats. For a raw wood appearance, we use toners that give a natural finish. For certain finishes, we use mineral paint which is becoming quite popular. Mineral paint preserves the wood and creates a refined, uniform, durable, and water-resistant finish. For the protective coat, we use polyurethanes or clear or solid lacquers. Lacquers allow for different degrees of sheen—flat, matte, satin, or semi-gloss.

We use a polyurethane protective coat in areas that might come into contact with water, like a wood countertop near a sink. Lacquer can delaminate over time when exposed to moisture or heat. We don’t polyurethane kitchen cabinets because lacquer has a more luxurious finish. However, on a countertop, because of the angle, the difference between the two isn’t very noticeable. All our interior industrial wood finishes are from boutique suppliers that specialize in interior wood finishes.

We’re Not Happy Until You’re Happy

Our job is to achieve the colour and finish you envision. We’ll ask for your input on the colour, depth, and tone as we progress with the job, and we’ll prepare samples for you and get your sign off once you’re satisfied. We’ll ask you to check the work while our temporary spray booth is set up, and whether there are any areas you’d like us to spray out. If there’s anything too dark, we’ll take it down to bare wood and start from scratch again.

Yes, we’re perfectionists, but you wouldn’t expect any less from us, would you?
